FONT FACTS AND A PRINTING PRIMER

02.12.09
THE WINDOWS APPROACH
The twin problems of proprietary drivers and limited font selection were serious obstacles to DOS users creating sophisticated and professionallooking documents. The widespread use of Windows changed all that. Developments elsewhere in the computer industry-particularly in the Macintosh and desktop publishing worlds, and advancements in laser and other printing technology-were incorporated by Microsoft in the Windows operating system. Now, instead of every program needing its own printer driver, only one is needed: the Windows driver for that printer. It is installed by the user in the operating system itself and can be used by all Windows applications.

This makes it much simpler for users to install new programs and new printers. A manufacturer can now supply just one Windows driver with its printer, rather than dozens for each DOS program.
